A great day with incredible views!!!! I think I took 100 photos - well maybe 10 in reality, but I wanted to take 100! Every time I turned a corner, or crested a hill the view had changed, and really the best views were when I was going downhill and needed both hands…not really safe to stop on the side of the road so no photos. I have them in my memory, and you will have to look at the photos I post and just imagine what you can 😀😀
I was up early, but packing up is still taking a long time. Today I decided to split up my tent. The foot print I put in my handle bar bag, the tent itself on my left fork and the fly in my clothing bag on the back rack. Everything seems to be working well that way, so I’ll continue with it that way.
I had planned on going to Tim Hortons for a Quick breakfast, but the trail system I was on didn’t have an exit at the right place, so I went back to the same breakfast place as yesterday….Chez Oeufs.
After a quick and filling breakfast, I was off riding, right on the coast on a bike path with great views …I was looking down at my GPS when I heard my name! Ghislain from yesterday had gotten up early to ride with me. So nice! He was my tour guide….pointing out many sights, and explaining things. The tide was out, and he saw a seal on a black rock in the far distance. I could just make it out…and saw the movements, but never would have noticed it by myself. Ghislain pointed out what used to be a flour mill, powered by the creek which is now a private residence. We then made a short detour to see the second highest lighthouse in Québec (33 m), the 90 m submarine that housed 70 men and criss crossed the North Atlantic ocean from 1967-2000, and the museum of the Empress of Ireland - it transported people between the cities of Québec and Liverpool before sinking in 1914. We didn’t take the time to go inside as I did have a long ride planned for today, but the best part of having company is that I had someone to take my photo!!! No selfies this morning!
We rode together to the town of Ste Luce- about 15km away, where we saw the beach and all the wood carvings done with chain saws. I think I took a photo of each one….I’m always so impressed with carvings. Love them. Next weekend is the sand castle competition which I’m sure will be amazing. I don’t think I can make it back for that…but I love this too.
While we were looking out to the water we noticed a man who was raking up the seaweed debris on the sand. We were discussing the purpose of what he was doing when he came over to have a conversation with us 😀. Luc lives in Montréal, but is in Rimouski for one month. He comes to the beach 3-4 times a week to clean it up…volunteering his time 3-4 hrs every time he comes out. Keeps him in shape and he’s doing his part to ensuring people enjoy their time at the beach. His belief is that each person on earth is a cell, and it takes all the cells working together to keep the world going. Just like each cell in our body is working together to keep us going. That’s my takeaway for today. Give what we can, when we can to work together and keep our beautiful world going.
Well…after that uplifting message, we all said goodbye and went on our way….Luc continued to rake up seaweed, Ghislain had to fight the wind going back home to Rimouski, and I had a glorious tail wind and spectacular views all the way to Matane.
Thankfully the road was flat today, but looking east…it’s hilly, and in a few days, when I’ve gone as far north as I can on this south shore of the St Lawrence…. I’ll be heading east ….and the hills. But Ghislain assures me that they aren’t too bad. I’m sure in hind sight I’ll say the same thing, but there may be a few tears before I’m done!!!😂😂😂.
That’s it for today, huge thank you to Ghislain for giving up his Saturday morning, and fighting a headwind home to be my tour guide…very much appreciated 😀….tomorrow is another day and I’m really looking forward to it.
