July 21 - Day 76 - Mont Louis 63 km

View from my campground

Twisty curvy roads

View this morning

I’ve seen so many small creeks, and today I finally stopped to take a photo,

Most of the time I’m looking in my mirror to look for traffic, but the past few days it’s so that I can see what the views look like going the other way.

My lunch spot

Curvy hilly roads.

Paraglider at Mont St Pierre

Beach in town

Nice to feel welcomed!

Lunch…lobster roll.  Yesterday I had a lobster panini

I keep my phone in this pouch when I’m cycling.  I pull it out, swipe to get to the camera and hold it up to take a photo.  It’s not always safe or possible to stop, so I’ve gotten quite good at taking the photos while cycling

I think today had the best views ever….every corner, every hill it just got better and better!  Thank you so much to Ghislain for convincing me to come this way….of course I haven’t hit the big hills yet, so I may still curse you a little bit, but I’m sure the pain will disappear quickly, and I’ll be left with the memory of these spectacular views.

There are a few things that I’ve noticed.  The houses here are smaller and simpler, and very few have flowers in the front.  A few more have shrubs, but the vast majority only have grass.  Not sure if that’s because people here are too busy to tend a garden, or more likely is that the growing season is too short here.

Looking back the houses between Ottawa and Montreal were massive…3-4 car garages….really estates, and almost all made of stone.  Further north the houses got smaller, but still large and most were made of stone or brick.  Now here the houses are made of wood, with siding, much smaller houses with small yards.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that all over Ontario, the Canadian flag was flying or displayed in many houses.  True it was around July 1st, but everywhere the flag was flying or displayed on the homes.  Once in Québec, all I saw was their provincial flag, and not a single Canadian flag….well we know why!  But up here in the Gaspésie, I have seen the Canadian flag flying along with the fleur de lis.  Nice to see actually.

I had a super late start today….just enjoyed a relaxing morning as I reassembled my bike….all clean now.  Met some cyclists at Tim’s, they are done their little tour.  I met Carolyne a few hours into my ride.  She was happy to stop and chat.  She stayed at this same campground that I’m in tonight.  In the firms actually, and told ke about the restaurant close by.  Then another 29 km further, ran into a young man who’s just going to start university in the fall.  They both told me about the big hills coming up….I’m just blocking it from my mind….I’ll deal with it when I have to!

Just a few km from here is the town of Mont St Pierre, and my friend Stewart said they had the Canadian Hang Gliding championships here in 1980&1983….and that he set a Canadian endurance record by staying up for 7 hrs 50 min, and also another time got to 4000 feet over launch!  Certainly a special place, they do have paragliding tandem flights here….maybe next time I’m here.  😀😀😀

Also, my Brother In Law Ron told me yesterday that I’ve passed the point where the st Lawrence is a river and becomes the gulf of St Lawrence- the Atlantic Ocean, so I’ve successfully crossed from the pacific to the Atlantic.  Ok- done…. I can stop now!!!😂😂😂    Wait….the objective was to cross Canada, not just get from one ocean to another!!!  I’d best continue on….and those hills ahead of me will be crossed by foot….one way or another!

Today was cool and windy, temps never went above 14C, and although there was evidence of recent rainfall with the wet roads, I stayed dry all day!!!  So tomorrow will be a slightly longer distance than today….but the elevation gain will make up for the shorter distance.

I have to chuckle when you are apprehensive about the hills coming up for you. For goodness sakes! You have already cycled through the Rocky Mountains Lucille. These hills can’t be that bad after conquering the mountains!! You go girl!😊🥰
