I cycled hard this morning to get here in plenty of time to relax before getting on the ferry. I’m on the ferry….a relaxing 5 hour ferry ride to the islands.
The islands are an archipelago of 7 islands that are a total of 79 square miles in size, and although they are part of the Gaspésie of Québec, they are in fact closer to the Maritime provinces and NL.
On the Islands the weather is very different than on mainland Québec. The winters are milder, and they have fewer heat waves in the summer. They are in danger from climate change. They have warmed 2.3C in the late 19th century, twice the global average. The winter ice is melting soon, thus not able to protect the islands from winter storms. As a result parts of the shoreline has eroded by as much as 4.3 meters per year in the 2010’s, thus putting roads into jeopardy and important infrastructure such as the hospital and city hall are sitting on deteriorating cliffs.
So now is the time to come visit these islands before there is too much destruction.
