June 8 - Day 33 - Kenora 148.2 km

Stormy up ahead

The terrain has changed again

Another day done….and I’m glad it’s done, but it was a challenging day….but only the beginning…and the end….and the middle was hard too!!!

I got up at 0500….and was ready to go by 0630, but by this time it was raining, so my tent was packed away soaking wet.  It never really dried off after the big storm last night.  So wet it went into the pack.

I knew it would be a bit before I could find some breakfast, and I went off the highway to a restaurant that said was open…but it wasn’t.  A 15 min detour.  Finally I got to Yogi Bear around 40 km from where I had camped.  It was great, and warm but not warm enough that I got dry.  The rain was really coming down, and my options were to go back to the town of Richer - 50km away, or continue to Kenora.  I was strongly considering going back….when I got a text from a good buddy who gave me the kick in the pants that I needed, to get out the door and continue on.  And that’s what I did.  Around Falcon Lake is where the rain stopped 80 km from where I started this morning.

Fantastic….it was starting to warm up a bit….but this is where the terrain changed, no more prairies…hello to the Canadian Shield, and now it was hilly with a headwind.  Good for drying off the clothes but hard on the legs.  Beautiful, and I saw some beautiful small lakes with a cabin at the end….but mostly I had my head down working hard.  I had a good breakfast at 0900, then at Falcon Lake I had a cinnamon bun.  That was it for the day…..so I was feeling a bit depleted going up all those rolling hills.

Just after Falcon Lake I entered Ontario….and just like all the other provinces, someone was watching and sent a text at that exact moment.  It has been a different person each province….who will it be for Québec??‽!!!  😀😀😀

I’m in a hotel room here in Kenora, drying out….washed my bike and gear, did a load of laundry and my tent is hung up to dry.  I had a bit of a thought to get to Fort Frances in one day….but it’s over 200 km with lots of elevation gain.  My plan says three days, but I’m hoping for two.

The bad news are the hills of Mordor thunder bay to the Sault. But the good news is homemade butter tarts all through Ontario. You can go 30 km on just one!
More good news- each up followed by the sweetest down. If we came around a corner and couldn’t see an up we’d say “it’s good for the foreseeable future”. Living in the moment!
